I Think I'll Spend My Birthday In Avignon!

Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday dear me
Happy Birthday to me

Yes, today is my birthday and we are spending it in the lovely Avignon.  There's lot of jobs on today.  There's no such thing as a relaxing cruise...

Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!

First things first.  Champagne brekky, tiny pancakes and then a walk down to the Pont St-Bènèzet.

The Pont St-Bènèzet supposedly owes its existence to a 'heavenly vision' experienced by the shepherd Bènèzet in 1177, in which he was commanded to build a bridge at this site.  It was first destroyed in the 13th century, rebuilt and then destroyed a few more times.  It was finally reduced to the condition it is in now during a flood in 1669.

Sur le Pont d'Avignon
L'on y danse, l'on y danse
Sur le Pont d'Avignon
Lyon y danse tous en rond

On the bridge of Avignon
We all dance there, we all dance there
On the bridge of Avignon
We all dance there in a ring

Incidentally, the song's words that people danced ON (sur) the bridge are misleading, as they actually danced UNDER (sous) it.

Today's birthday adventure was to include a trip into the Les Halles de Avignon. That's right - more food!  Tonight is a seafood extravaganza and this morning, we were invited to accompany the ship's Executive Chef, Istvan to the market to  buy the seafood.

The inside food market is all the range here in France.  It was all fresh.  All yummy looking and all for us to eat....
