If I could have the use of a time machine, I think I would use it to go back to the time when they came up with idea to build these cities on top of the highest hill. I would love to see how they physically did it.
It is an absolutely amazing feat of engineering, architecture, stone masonry, paving, bricklaying, and town planning!
We parked about half way up and then, as they don't let cars go any further, we walked the rest of the way to the top.
And this was the view!
The fields surrounding Motovun are filled with Oak trees which happens to be where the truffles grow. Motovun is a truffle town. They are all about the truffles. Truffle tepenade, truffle paste, truffle salt, truffle sauces, truffle butter.... you name it - they can truffle it!
There's an oldy worldy square right at the top - with a fountain and everything.
As we travel around Croatia, we are learning more and more about the history of the country.... in fact, if I don't leave here with a PHD in Croatian History, I might have to eat my hat!
I can tell you, with great confidence, that the town of Motovun was once under the rule of the Venetians. You can tell because of the winged Venetian lion holding the open book.
Things were built so well back then, I mean look at the slope that this palace was built on!
(BEB - this door is especially for you, cause I heard you were enjoying them)
This is Jakov, our tour guide. He has so much information in his brain that I wonder sometimes if it might explode..... I know mine feels like doing that sometimes when he's telling us stuff!
Jakov organised a special truffle lunch for us at this restaurant with the most amazing view. We had asparagus soup with truffles, then we had two types of truffle pasta and then..... truffle cake!
It was delicious, but yes, we felt quite sick afterwards.
As we left a chap jumped off the top with his parasail. Cer-razy!
