Lunch At Mum's House

Our guide, Jakov (which is Croatian for James.... so we now call him Jim - pronounced Yim)  anyway, his family live in a gorgeous little village near the end of the world - about 45 minutes drive from Split, and today we were invited for possibly the best Croatian lunch we've ever eaten.

We arrived at this lush green paradise where Jimbo's dad has his own grape vines, herb and vegetable garden and animals.  His mum makes her own bread and cheese and they cooked a scrum-diddily-umptious mixed meat stew and potatoes - all from their farm!

They cooked this meal extravaganza in a traditional Croatian way

Under the Bell - Ispod čripnje or Peke

And then cooked in this fire oven that Jim's dad built himself.

Yim's parents understand some English, so they could understand us, but their English speaking skills were only slightly better than our Croatian which made for an interesting conversation of his dad talking to me in Croatian or German, and everyone (who understood the Croatian) laughing and me not getting to joke or even the gist!

Lunch ended up being a three course degustation.... we tried the liquor and the elderberry juice that his mum makes as well as wine.

Their hospitality was overflowing and we were very grateful for the experience.

Jim's dad invited us back next year when his grape vines would be ready for picking.  I might have to learn a bit more Croatian by then!

This is Jim's dog.
